We’ve tried and tested the best foam rollers available so you can unlock muscular tension without having to visit a massage therapist. There are lots of different styles of foam roller which serve different purposes. Choose one that is appropriate for your level of experience using foam rollers, if you are a beginner, go for something softer. If you are a hardcore athlete, aim for something firmer to switch off those tight muscles. We’ve personally used all of these in our clinics and rehab gyms over the last 10+ years, so we know what works and what doesn’t. 1. Best for Beginners – PhysioWorld Foam Roller
This is the softest foam roller on our recommended list. Easily the best choice if you are new to foam rolling, bruise easily or quite simply dislike excessive pain!! It also comes in 2 size options: 45 or 90cm if you are a bigger build.
Pros: Good for lymphatic drainage and gentle massage.
Cons: Too soft for hardcore athletes. Can slightly lose it’s shape over time.
This medium density foam roller is an intermediate users dream. Firm enough to release deep knots, yet without any aggressive bumps or spikes. We recommend this to everyone who isn’t a serious athlete. The only downside is the solid centre, if you are packing this in a suitcase, you can’t stuff clothes inside it to maximise luggage space.
Pros: Suitable for 90% of users, selection of colours.
Cons: Solid centre, heavier to travel with.
We LOVE this roller, every member of the pain relief guides team uses this before our workouts. Simply the best roller for anyone who trains frequently or intensively. 33cm long and hollow centred, it’s perfect for travelling with.Although it’s slightly more expensive, it’s worth every penny, as you’ll never outgrow it, plus it will last forever (cheaper rollers simply fall apart after 2-3 years).
Pros: Extra firm, no compression, no wear and tear…ever!!
Cons: Will make beginners eyes water!!
Simply the BEST roller we’ve ever tried and the one we recommend to all our patient’s! This is the slightly softer version of ‘The Grid X’. Beginners, intermediates and advanced users will all love this roller. ‘The Grid Mini’ version is just 14cm long, which means you can take it to the park, gym, on holiday without any stress.
Pros: Travel friendly, perfect density firm compression.
This is the king of the deep tissue massage rollers, each projection gets deep into layers of tissue in a way that others don’t. Great for larger areas, such as IT bands, calf’s and spines. We recommend this as a secondary roller if you already have one of the others listed above.
Pros: Super deep massage
Cons: Too aggressive for small areas or beginners.
